Preparation and practice makes perfect.

Deck

Since 2017, we have been delivering a different type of MCA orals prep. No expensive prep courses or complex packages; just affordable, flexible, on-demand support from a team of expert mariners who are with you every step of the way.

The more, the merrier.

Small-group clinics

Each week, we run a series of friendly, interactive sessions covering both the COLREGs/Buoyage and General Knowledge content that you need to know. They are each two hours long, are limited to a maximum of six people and are only £40 a go.

We keep the group small to ensure that there’s lots of opportunity to practice answering questions and to ask your own. As a result, they’re a great way of practicing speaking while also being mindful of expenses.

It’s not a second-rate option though; you’ll meet study buddies and learn a lot from being with your peers, regardless of whether they are showing you how to or how not to answer!

Flexible

All of our prep is flexible, so there's no reason not to drop in and try out one of our Clinics. Trust us, you'll love it and you'll be back.

Interactive

Run like a group mock exam, these sessions are highly interactive and you'll get loads of time to ask and answer questions.

Friendly

It can be intimidating to start speaking out loud, especially in a group but rest assured; with us, nobody is made a fool of.

  • Whitehorse Maritime provide invaluable Oral Prep Clinics. I can honestly say I don’t feel I would have passed without them. Both Kieran and Paul are incredibly helpful and promptly respond to any queries. All I can say is a HUGE thankyou and I can highly recommend them!

  • The COLREGs clinics were great to get my confidence up in speaking with people I’ve not met before. All well and good practicing by yourself but it is an oral exam after all so get talking aloud and get the structure of answers correct. I will be recommending them to all who want to listen!

  • I used Whitehorse for their COLREGS and General knowledge clinics as well as a mock oral exam in preparation for my own OOW orals and loved it. Their advice and support was excellent and really helped me feel ready to sit the exam. They polish off your knowledge and build your confidence.

  • The general knowledge clinics provided an excellent opportunity to practice oral exam style questions in a relaxed environment with ample opportunity for peer review amongst the other candidates in the session. They played a massive role in my success on the day and could not have done it without them. Thanks very much guys!

FAQs

  • How do you run the clinics?

The clinics are run like group mock exams or like a wide-ranging Q&A session, rather than a lecture where you are taught a certain subject. Your tutor will ask you questions from across the syllabus (depending on whether it's a COLREGs or General Knowledge clinic) to get you to practice speaking on a wide range of different subjects.

  • Which clinics should I attend?

Each week we run COLREGs and General Knowledge clinics for different tickets. The COLREGs are divided into ‘normal’ COLREGs and Advanced COLREGs; we recommend that everyone except Chief Mate (Unlimited) and Master (Unlimited) candidates start in the COLREGs clinic before being invited to move up to the Advanced session when we’ve seen your level.

The General Knowledge clinics are divided into OOW and Mate/Master so that should make it fairly clear. The only exception is that we recommend Master 200gt candidates attend the OOW General Knowledge.

  • When should I get started?

We tend to recommend that our clients attend their first clinic around four to six weeks before the exam, although that very much depends on how much time you have available and if you’re trying to revise while working. If you are, we recommend allowing yourself more time.

  • What if I don’t feel ready?

A common mistake that people make is to want to feel ‘ready’ before they start engaging with us but the best approach is to view our support and practicing verbalising as part of the process of becoming ‘ready’.

The problem is that you are unlikely to feel that ready in the run up to your exam because it can be quite overwhelming, especially if you’re revising alone, so you might put off seeking help until it’s too late.

A related issue is that you might get to the point that you feel ready for the exam and then do a mock only to find out that you’ve gone too deep on one area, ignored another and can’t explain yourself confidently, and there may not be enough time left for us to help.

  • Will I be made fun of if I make a mistake in the clinic?

Absolutely not. Our small-group sessions are friendly, supportive sessions where we will always push you to do better but we will never make you feel stupid for not getting things perfectly right. Practice makes perfect but you’re not going to be perfect at the beginning!
