OOW Oral Prep: Whitehorse’s Path to Pass System
Having helped thousands of candidates through their MCA OOW oral exam, we have developed Whitehorse’s unique Path to Pass System for OOW Oral Prep! It combines up-to-date, engaging eLearning resources, with regular small-group sessions and further private sessions to ensure that you enter your orals with confidence.
Although it’s a system, it’s not a straitjacket; everything that we do is about flexibility and we will work with you to develop a package which fits around your level, availability and budget. A key principle of our Path to Pass System is that it is always better to start speaking sooner rather than later, so don’t wait until you feel ‘ready’ to start participating in small-group sessions or private ones. The best candidates make speaking out loud a core part of their revision and don’t expect to know everything at the start. This helps them to find their weak spots early and build confidence in their knowledge and delivery over time.
Step 1 – eLearning for a few months
Most of our candidates start off with our eLearning resources for between one to three months to help them get the basics sorted. All of our modules are kept rigorously up-to-date and are arranged as short lessons so you can dip in and out whenever you have time. They work via any browser or you can even download an app, which also works offline.
We have great modules on a wide array of different subjects (for both Deck and Engine) and they are available either individually or as a bundle. There are also some free samples and don’t forget that Cadets get big discounts.
Step 2 – Small-group clinics for 4-5 weeks
Then our candidates tend to move on to our weekly small-group sessions (we call them ‘clinics’) and normally attend weekly from four to five weeks before their exam. Each week we run COLREGs and General Knowledge ‘clinics’, which are two hours long and have a maximum of six in the group.
They’re a great way to get you to start speaking out loud without costing much and you’ll also learn a lot from being with your peers. We can block book for you or you can book individually here.
Step 3 – Private sessions for 2-4 weeks
Finally, our candidates move on to private sessions with one of our expert tutors in the two to four weeks before the exam. In the earlier stages, these are likely to be tutorials on tricky subjects or just check-in sessions to keep you on track with your studies, shifting more into mock orals to help find your weak areas as you get closer to the exam. They tend to have a week or two’s lead time, so please do book ahead of time.
The advantage that Whitehorse has as a large team of tutors is that you can do mock exams with a variety of mock examiners to improve your confidence and resilience in the real thing.
