EOOW (Small Vessel - SV) Oral Prep

At Whitehorse Maritime Academy, we provide flexible, structured support for candidates preparing for the EOOW (Small Vessel - SV) oral exam. Whether you want a full eLearning prep course or targeted help with specific weak areas, we help you build knowledge, practise explaining engineering concepts and prepare with confidence through eLearning, private tutoring and mock oral practice.

Choose what works best for you

There are two ways to prep with us

Our approach is way more hands-on than you'll find elsewhere; no pre-rehearsed answers, no scripts, no one-size-fits-none, just deep understanding and the confidence that naturally goes with it.

Path to Pass System

Our Path to Pass System

Full prep — best if you're starting from scratch.

Our three-step approach uses our eLearning prep course to build knowledge before moving into private tutoring and mock oral practice to identify weak areas and prepare properly for the oral exam.

  1. Build a strong foundation with eLearning:

Up-to-date, engaging eLearning prep course for 2-3 months before the oral.

  2. Develop your answers with private tutoring:

Private sessions help you work through difficult topics and apply your knowledge to exam-style questions.

  3. Add polish with mock oral practice:

Mock exams help you practise clear answers and build confidence for the oral exam.

Flexible Approach

Or Our Flexible Approach

Targeted — best if you have already started your prep.

From one eLearning module to a single mock exam, you can choose to combine any of our options to suit your needs and budget, or to top-up another prep course.

We sure do! We started with Deck oral exam prep and are probably best known for it, but we have also been delivering Engine oral exam prep for years.

Our team of Chief Engineer Unlimited and ETO tutors supports candidates for all engineering oral exams, from EOOW to Chief Engineer and ETO, on Unlimited and Small Vessel routes.

Our Engine oral exam preparation is built around flexible support, not a fixed classroom course. Most candidates use a combination of eLearning, private tutoring and mock oral practice.

The eLearning prep courses and legislation bundles help build structure and strengthen key subject areas, while private sessions and mock orals help you apply that knowledge, explain your answers clearly and prepare for exam-style questioning.

Most candidates benefit from starting a couple of months before the oral exam. This gives you time to work through the relevant eLearning, identify weak areas and add private sessions before the final stages of preparation.

If your exam is sooner than that, we can still help you focus on the areas most likely to make a difference.

The best preparation usually combines knowledge-building with speaking practice. eLearning study materials help you build the foundation, then private sessions help you work through weak areas, apply your knowledge to practical engineering scenarios and practise explaining your answers clearly. Closer to the exam, mock oral exams help you build confidence under pressure.

Yes. We do not give every candidate the same fixed study plan because we understand that every candidate starts from a different place. Instead, we help you build your own study plan based on your syllabus timeline, experience and weaker areas.

Most candidates prefer the structure of complete preparation package but it's absolutely fine if you only need help with specific weak areas or just want a final mock oral before the exam.

The full route works well if you want structure from start to finish. If you have already done significant preparation elsewhere, private sessions for mock oral practice may be enough. If you are unsure, contact us and we can recommend a sensible plan.

Private sessions can be tutorial-style, mock-style or a mixture of both. Early sessions often focus on weak areas, technical explanation and building confidence. Later sessions can become more exam-style so that you practise giving clear, structured answers under oral exam conditions.

Yes, of course. Some candidates only need a mock oral or a small number of private sessions, especially if they have already prepared elsewhere.

However, our advice would be to avoid leaving your first mock to the last few days before your exam. Aiming for around 7-10 days before is wise, to give you time to polish any weak areas.

Yes. Many candidates come to us after college, another prep course or self-study. We can help you identify gaps, practise answering exam-style questions and build confidence before the oral.

A fixed course can be useful but it also means moving at the pace of the course and the other candidates. Our flexible approach lets you focus on the areas that matter most to you.

Yes. An unsuccessful oral exam can knock your confidence but many candidates come back stronger once they have a clear recovery plan.

We can help you review what happened, rebuild weak areas, practise answering under pressure and prepare more confidently for the next attempt.
