The Path to Pass System

Best if you're getting started from scratch.

A clear, step-by-step preparation pathway, giving candidates a tried-and-tested route to success that can still flex around work, life, and budget.

Comprehensive yet flexible.

What is the Path to Pass system?

Our Path to Pass system is a structured, three-step system designed to provide candidates with the most effective preparation for their oral exam. By combining cutting-edge eLearning prep courses, interactive small-group clinics and tailored one-on-one tutoring, we ensure that every candidate has access to the tools they need to succeed.

Step 1: Build a strong foundation with eLearning

Interactive eLearning prep course for two to three months before your orals.

Our eLearning modules are the cornerstone of your preparation, allowing you to master critical topics at your own pace. Candidates find them invaluable as a quick reference closer to the exam too.

  • Interactive, gamified COLREGs and Buoyage eLearning modules, for Deck candidates.
  • Short, digestible lessons with flashcard questions, designed for flexible study.
  • Trustworthy, frequently updated content.
  • Accessible on any device, including offline app access.
  • Engaging podcasts for different learning styles or to study on the move.
  • Access to our repository of oral reports from previous exams.
  • Includes WhitehorseAI, a unique ChatGPT-powered learning companion.

Step 2: Gain confidence in weekly small-group clinics

Friendly, mock-style Q&A sessions for four to six weeks before your orals.

Deck candidates attend our small-group clinics, capped at six people, because speaking out loud and engaging in structured practice builds your confidence and highlights weak areas early.

  • Mock-style sessions on COLREGs and General Knowledge.
  • Real-time feedback from experienced tutors.
  • Small groups so lots of opportunities to ask and answer questions.
  • Learn from peers and meet study buddies.

Step 3: Add polish with private tutoring and mock exams

Private sessions tailored to your unique needs for three to four weeks before your orals.

Whether you want to book a series of structured sessions to cover the whole syllabus or a realistic mock with someone new, our friendly and experienced Master and Chief Engineer Unlimited tutors will get the absolute best out of you.

  • Tutorials on complex subjects or weak areas.
  • Mock exams with detailed feedback from a large team of tutors.
  • Flexible scheduling around your commitments.
  • Tutors in different time zones to ensure availability.

More Info

Our Path to Pass System combines three core preparation tools; comprehensive eLearning, weekly small-group clinics and private sessions with experienced tutors. It gives you structure without locking you into a rigid college-style course.

Both options use the same core elements but the Path to Pass System combines eLearning, clinics and private sessions into a comprehensive and structured, yet still flexible, oral prep course designed around you.

Traditional prep courses run over a fixed period, with a fixed timetable, and with no regard for your oral exam date or your needs. That can work for some candidates but it often means paying more to move at the speed of the group, whether you are ahead, behind or struggling with specific areas.

The Path to Pass System is structured and comprehensive but flexible, so it builds you up to your exact exam date, caters to your strengths and weaknesses, and is easier to fit around work, life and family commitments.

Each element does a different job. eLearning helps you build the knowledge base, clinics help you practise speaking and learn from other candidates, and private sessions allow for targeted feedback on your own weak areas. Used together, they give you a much stronger preparation route than relying on one method alone.

No. It is a structured approach, not a rigid course with a high, fixed cost. We encourage candidates to use all three elements, but your preparation can still be shaped around your exam date, confidence level, budget and availability.

Yes. We do not give every candidate the same fixed study plan because we understand that every candidate starts from a different place. Instead, we help you build your own study plan based on your syllabus timeline, experience and weaker areas.

It varies, but most candidates start with our eLearning prep course around 2–3 months before their exam, add clinics 4–6 weeks beforehand and then use private sessions in the final 3–4 weeks.

The aim is not to convince you to study for longer or book more sessions. We recommend spreading your preparation over time because it is generally more effective, less stressful and lower risk than relying on an intensive last-minute prep course.

You do not need to be exam-ready before joining clinics or booking a private session. In fact, starting early is the best way to understand the depth of knowledge expected and find out where you are while there is still time to improve.

No preparation provider can honestly guarantee a pass. What we can do is give you structured materials, experienced tutors, realistic practice and clear feedback so that you go into the exam confident that you are as well-prepared as you can be.

The quality and effectiveness of our approach are reflected in our 1,000+ five-star reviews on Google and an overall 5.0 review score from candidates who have used our services.

Yes. Many candidates use Whitehorse alongside college, self-study or another prep course because they want more flexibility, extra speaking practice, targeted feedback and support right up to the day of the exam.
