Created in partnership with the Marine Society, this module breaks down the engineering knowledge expected of EOOW candidates, covering the main machinery, auxiliary systems, emergency systems, electrical systems and engine room watchkeeping principles found onboard modern vessels.
It is designed to give you a clear and practical understanding of how key engineering systems operate, how they are monitored and maintained, and how engineering officers contribute to safe and effective vessel operations. The module examines propulsion machinery, pumps, compressors, steering gear, fuel and lubrication systems, cooling systems, electrical distribution, emergency equipment and the responsibilities of the engineer on watch.
By the end of the module, you’ll be better equipped to explain engineering systems clearly, understand how faults and emergencies may develop, and apply safe watchkeeping principles in line with industry practice and the standards expected at EOOW level. Each lesson includes self-test questions, giving you the chance to check your understanding as you go and identify any areas that need further revision.
Regularly reviewed and updated to reflect current guidance and industry practice, the course also includes useful links and references where appropriate, helping you connect the learning material with the wider standards and expectations behind safe engineering operations.
